This facility is about to have several entirely new buildings open up from the looks of things. It has a couple trails that meander along mowed paths through the tall prairie grass to a small lake and then along the Coushatta creek through the trees. STUPENDOUS wildflowers on the breezy spring day.

I had a nice chat with one of the officials here before I started my walk. It's always nice to be able to talk about our wonderful outdoor adventures with someone who is so involved with It's stewardship.

I did not catch her name, but she brightened my day and I thank her for it 🙂

They have learning opportunities for the public and the first weekend in April is one so if you are around come check it out.

Although we were disappointed in not seeing a prairie chicken, we weren't actually surprised. We slowly drove the auto trail, and used the Merlin app to determine the birds that we were hearing. We saw bobwhites, confirmed by their song, giant jackrabbits, and a lot of other bird species that we don't normally see in Katy.
While we didn't see anything Earth shattering, it was still very enjoyable to slowly drive and scout around.
I would like to go back another time maybe when there's more of a likelihood of seeing an actual prairie chicken.

This is a small patch of managed coastal prairie dedicated to preserving the unique and astounding Attwater's greater prairie chicken which is a critically endangered endemic species to the Texas/Louisiana coastal prairie. Although I didn't see any prairie chickens during my visit, I watched a gorgeous sunrise and listened to the inspiring dawn songs of the prairie birds - including Eastern meadowlarks, several species of sparrows, bobwhite quail (I scared a covey of them from the short grass), and even an owl. Later, I saw a magnificent flock of 30-40 sandhill cranes standing in the fields and making a noisy squawking. Because they are "extraordinarily short staffed", I was only able to see the display in the old visitor's center for a few minutes. This summer, they may be opening a new, very nice looking visitor's center!

Edit: came back after 2 months of my first review I asked the horseshoe trail this time a it was finally open, it's now autumn so went in the morning while it was cool. If your a person who can't handle too much direct sun but like getting out, is recommend wearing a cap or wider brim hat for the horseshoe trail as it more in the open prairie land, sycamore trail is more of a mix between shaded and open prairie. Also looks like there getting ready to create a new hiking trail. Adding more photo of how horseshoe trail looks in the fall.
Went here kinda on a whim, enjoy the open space only wish the visitor center was open at least a few hours on the weekend, didn't ser any prairie chicken but still enjoyed my visit and seeing what natural vegetation was around this region of Texas

This is a very unique and relaxing place to find yourself with nature. It’s 4+ miles drive tour option and the two walking tracks are really nice to enjoy the place. I visited it yesterday and I am already planning many other visits. I hope one day I am able to encounter the Prairie Chicken. More than that I hope the work many staffs are doing in that place help to save the endangered specie.

Mmmm It is ok... there’s really nothing in this place. We saw some cows. No shade in trails at all. There is a picnic area. But, it looks like nobody’s taken care of it, BEWARE OF ENORMOUS SPIDERS in bird watching area. (See pics) One of my children almost bumps into one, and then we saw 4 of them!!!! Enormous spiderwebs and spiders they looked like the ones in Jumanji movie to give you an idea. My photos don’t make them justice.
