Great experience. Lots of history. Lake Drummond is breathtaking. Tons of mosquitos, youll need bug spray for sure. Nice trails. There's bathrooms at certain trail heads. Be careful on trails with wooded paths, some boards are missing.

One of the great wonders. A great place to come check out and visit if you into wildlife and beauty. Bring insect repellent, go early and drive slow along the rides. My kids didn’t really enjoy it. If you into just you and the outdoors this may be for. No cellphone service out there either.

We did the wildlife drive jumping out of the car at the boardwalks which was a great way to see the swamp without feeding too many mosquitoes. We spent some time on reflection pier at Lake Drummond where there was enough breeze to keep the mosquitoes away. We didn't see a whole lot of wildlife but it was mid day so that is to be expected. We did see a prothonatory warbler so that was neat.

There's a few ways to access the park, but the most obvious is the rest stop on 17, which brings you right to part of the canal and ranger station. You can do a few public classes at the facility right over the bridge, like tree identification and such. There is small gift shop and interperative center. The park itself has some really interesting history and is a great place for beautiful nature photography, especially with the iconic dark, tannin stained water that gives that mirror reflection. Yes, there's bugs.

My family and I went on a hike on the Jericho Ditch Trail. This part of the Great Dismal Swamp is beautiful. The trail is flat and easy to navigate, even with a baby stroller. Our dogs loved it and we had a great time there.

we camped at the Lake Drummond Recreation Area. other than overhead air traffic, really quite. Poor cell coverage (but great for disconnecting). We did a sunset paddle on Lake Drummond- it was amazing. Very picturesque! We were surprised that there was a well maintained bathroom there. There was a downed tree that made getting to the lake a little difficult but we were able to do it in a kayak (motorboat would be REALLY difficult).

We enjoyed driving through and walking a bit. The horse flies, deer flies and mosquitoes were INSANE on the trails going through the swamp, so I can't recommend that walk this time of year. Insect repellent was useless. We saw a lot of turtles, a few frogs, skinks, and water snakes. It was very beautiful and probably very enjoyable if the pests weren't so annoying.
