It's our fouth time to visit this place. We once witnessed the migration of birds here a few years ago and hoped to see that again. We only saw a few geese today, but we still enjoyed the waving Reed and the quietness....
The visitor center is only opened on Friday to Monday....So restrooms will available only when the center opens.

A National Park Service managed wildlife refuge in NYC? Yes! This place is a wild bird hub and shorebird sanctuary. The trails are numerous and fun to traverse. Bring bug spray, water, maybe a snack, and wear clothes that repel bugs. The bugs are serious and will greet you before anything else. The birding here is phenomenal, and you start seeing amazing birds and hear bird songs right in the parking lot.you just have to listen and look around. Leave dogs at home since this place doesn't allow dogs. They won't like the environment either.

Beautiful short gravel road most everyone can do. Lots of colors during the fall, wildlife and views of the bay and city. Great benches to sit and chill. Great spot in the city to explore for a day. No snacks or anything at visitor center so bring food. Refillable water available.

Loved it! One major complaint: website info says this National Park property's visitor center is open every day except Christmas and New year's day. FALSE. The visitor center was closed today at 2 pm July 4, 2024. So needless to say, this National Park geek did not get a Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge cancellation stamp. The spot is beautiful though! I recommend going. And... the restrooms are INSIDE the visitor center. Ugh.

I can spend days here .
Great range of landscapes and foliage and almost unlimited species.
First visit I did the South Garden and then walked the loop around to where the Osprey nest is . As luck would have it the bird flew directly at me so I got good flight shots. I entered at 10am so after 11 the bright sun was causing glare and haze .

2nd visit 2 days later was much earlier. In addition to the warblers got good clicks again of Ospreys in flight . The landscapes and greenery is so soothing .

What an amazing group of individuals working here!

My STEAM Kids Action Team was fortunate enough to be chosen to participate in a project, studying the effects of climate change on the plant life at the Refuge.

Aside from identifying and monitoring the flora, we enjoyed some birding along the beautiful trails! It was great fun, educational, and a truly rewarding experience for all!

Take a break from the hustle! Don’t miss out on this nearby treasure! I highly recommend, for children and adults, alike!

I come here for birding and it’s a great park for it. You can see different kind of species of birds. Very nice and quiet if you like your quiet time. A good break from the busy and noisy NYC. You can also do plane spotting here if you’re into that. Easily accessible as well (at least for me). I love this park.
