Fantastic Wildlife Refuge with a welcome center with a lot of information and animals to read about and explore. The Wildlife Refuge is free to enter and explore

There is a very long boardwalk that allows you to wander through the wetlands and experience the wildlife.

My partner and I spent about an hour walking along the boardwalk looking at the various turtles, lizards, fish, birds and crabs.

Great spot to spend time.

This place provides a perfect setting to view wildlife and enjoy the beauty of the nature. Due to foolishness of few people not respecting the rules of such places, the place has been put under several restrictions couple of years ago and that will not change. I love going out there, ride my bike, observe wildlife, enjoy the sounds of nature and recharge myself.

Lovely board walk around the wet lands! We saw so many turtles and little fish. The women at the help center were quite insightful.

This is a nice place to stop and Stretch your legs on the boardwalk. The restrooms are clean and well maintained. There is an educational display highlighting local wildlife and habitats. While on the boardwalk plan on seeing a lot of Turtles, some snakes and plenty of insects.

An interesting little area with a couple boardwalks and plenty of nature. A great spot for a decent stop on the way to the Outer Banks. The boardwalks definitely need some maintenance but they're still very usable.

Beautiful place to walk around. Clean bathrooms! Free! We visited on a cooler day. I imagine on a warmer day there would be lots of wildlife to observe. For people with younger kiddos, be advised that there are places over the water with no railing. No big deal for older kiddos and adults.
Edited to Add: We went back on a warm day and saw an abundance of turtles sunning! We also went inside the little museum. There are native animals on display. (Taxidermy) The kids were fascinated by all the little details on each animal.

This is a wildlife refuge, so human creature comforts are not the focus. If you want to see some cool wildlife and are patient, this place can provide. We drove many miles down dirt roads and saw at least a dozen bears each day. Bring good binoculars and any necessities. Check out the tours offered throughout the summer, including the Red Wolf Center and the bear tours. Wildlife lovers will be fascinated by the information provided.

Really cool place! Stopped by on our way east, but it was worth it. Nice and peaceful, and they have a lot of good info of the area. Saw some otters in the river when we were there.
